About

A small team. A long horizon.

LeivOS started on March 1, 2025. We are building a desktop operating system the way we think one should be built today: small, clear, and honest about what it does.

Most operating systems carry decades of compatibility weight. We respect that. We also wanted to try the other path — start clean, use what we have learned, and make a desktop computer that is quick to boot, predictable to use, and simple to reason about.

The brand name for the kernel is Uusi — Finnish for new. The end-user product is LeivOS, from the Finnish leivos (a pastry). Two layers, one idea: something good, made carefully.

What we believe

  • An operating system should not watch you.
  • Software you pay for should be software you own.
  • Speed comes from removing things, not adding them.
  • Boring code that you understand beats clever code that you don't.

What we are not

LeivOS is not a Linux distribution. It is not a fork of an existing system. The kernel, the compositor, the network stack, and the cryptographic libraries are all original work, written from the bare metal up — in Assembly, C, and our own in-tree language, Tape.

Where we are

We are based in Finland. We sell directly to our customers. There is no investor pressure to squeeze the product. The roadmap belongs to the people using it.
